Ingredients

  • Two cups of sugar
  • Two tablespoons of butter
  • One cup of water
  • One tablespoon of salt
  • One cup of molasses

    Things That You Need

    • Large pot
    • Wooden spoon
    • A candy thermometer
    • A cup (preferably 32 ounces)
    • A large screw or a stick

      Directions

      • Pour all the ingredients in the pot and mix them thoroughly.
      • After you can form a viscous mixture, place the candy thermometer.
      • Let the pot sit on your stove and adjust the temperature between medium to high heat. You need to subject the mixture to the 270 - 280 degrees Fahrenheit. We call the soft cracking stage.
      • Once you are done with that stage, you can take it away from the stove for the mixture to cool down. Also, stir it if necessary.
      • You need to pour the mixture into the 32-ounce cup or a mold before it gets too sticky.
      • It will take an hour before the mixture gets hard. Put the screw or the stick before it hardens.

The butter is essential into the soft-crack stage. When you boil the mixture without butter, it would just boil up high, resulting in spills. If the butter you placed is not enough, then add more. However, you should be cautious because this temperature is already scalding hot.

      Conclusion

Some hunters suggest that you should not mix up molasses and corn, corn syrup, or any related corn ingredients. They say that this kind of deer lick is very pernicious to the health of the creature. In our research, we discovered that this could cause rumen acidosis, which is a fatal complication. If not treated, the deer can die within 1 to 5 days. Ruminants like deer are not compatible with such kind mixture.

Aside from your home, you can put these deer licks on several travel routes and thick trails in the bushes. Moreover, trails that are near the water are a perfect spot to place these deer delicacies.
